I proceeded to look closely at her face shape, bone structure, neck shape, hair texture, density, growth patterns etc. I also paid attention to skin tone, eye shape and body size, and asked several questions about her likes, dislikes- good and bad salon experiences. Styles that had and had not worked well in the past. Did she have favorite products?
Life style questions also came into play
Such as, are you an athlete? How often do you prefer to shampoo? How much time and effort are you willing to spend on your hair?
This detail seems normal to me but I suddenly noticed that my friend was starring at me with an OMG look on her face.
She informed me that no stylist had ever had that kind of conversation with her......even though all of this took about 5 minutes. I proceeded to explain how I would cut and color her and why I would make these choices.
She has since become a loyal client and among my biggest cheerleaders and source of referrals.
I am talking about this experience, not to pat myself on the back- but to help other people know what to look for in a consultation. Our clients should expect more from their stylist than " Hey, what do you want to do today?"or, "Just a trim?"
